Pollux is an early stage project created by Lucas Fernandez, Bernard Pratz, CKAB, and hackable:Devices that aims at creating a network of lower cost wireless sensors focused on monitoring environmental conditions in cities.

Licensed under both GPLv3 and Creative Commons the open source project uses a gateway (Created with a Beaglebone and Xbee S2 Module) and a seperate solar powered module (Driven by an Arduino Uno and Xbee S2 Module) to make its measurements and send the data to the web.

These include gathering real time data on:

  • Level of noise (50-90 dB)
  • Temperature (-40 ° C to +100 ° C ± 0.2 ° C)
  • Content of fine particles (PM10 filter) (0-0.5 mg/m3)

The project is currently being field testing with the help of the INRIA laboratory, and the team hopes with the help of the Open Source community future designs can help augment the large and very expensive polution sensors that cities currently deploy for their monitoring.
